Uber Gets Ready To Roll Out New Features For Women Riders

Back in 2019, Uber launched a Women Rider Preference feature in Saudi Arabia, which has since expanded to 40 more countries, including Canada, France, and Mexico, and now it’s finally going to be available in the U.S. Uber has announced they’re adding new “Women Preferences” features to give women more options for who they match with on ride-sharing Uber trips.

"When we make our platform better for women, we make it better for everyone," says Camiel Irving, Uber's vice president of operations, U.S. and Canada. "After hearing from women riders and drivers around the world, it was clear: Many want the option to match with other women. That's why we're proud to pilot Women Preferences in the U.S. for the first time ... It's about giving women more choice, more control, and more comfort when they ride and drive."

Here’s what we know about Uber’s new “Women Preferences”:

  • The pilot program is kicking off in three cities over the next few weeks: Los Angeles, San Francisco and Detroit.
  • Women riders will be able to request women drivers on demand.
  • Women riders will also be able to use the Reserve function to pre-book trips with women drivers.
  • They can also set a preference for a woman driver in their Uber app settings. It’s not a guarantee, but turning on the Women preference does increase the chance of getting a woman driver.
  • Women drivers will also have the option to request trips with female riders, even during peak earning hours, like evenings.
