The Salvation Army started National Donut Day in 1938 to honor the Donut Lassies, who handed out donuts to soldiers in World War One.

 

They're hosting the annual World Donut Eating Championship today in D.C. 

 

 

A professional eater named James Webb set a new record last year . . . 70 glazed donuts in eight minutes.
