Actor Jonathan Joss died Sunday night after being shot by his neighbor outside the remains of his San Antonio home. He was 59 years old.
Joss was the voice of John Redcorn on "King of the Hill", and he also played Chief Ken Hotate on "Parks and Recreation".
Joss's husband Tristan . . . yes, he was gay . . . gave his side of what happened, and it's somewhat complicated, so here's the short version:
This past January, Jonathan's childhood home burned down, and one of his dogs died in the fire. For years before that, Jonathan and Tristan had apparently dealt with homophobic neighbors who had THREATENED to burn it down.
On Sunday, Jonathan and Tristan went to the site to check their mail, and found, quote, "the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view."
They were obviously distraught, and started "yelling and crying." That's when a man approached them and started yelling gay slurs at them. Then he raised a gun, pointed it at them, and opened fire.
Tristan says Jonathan pushed him out of the way and saved his life. But Jonathan was struck several times and died at the scene.
Tristan says, quote, "I was with him when he passed. I told him how much he was loved."
The suspect, 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, was booked on a murder charge.
