Alex Ovechkin Using Goal Record Chase To Aid Cancer Research

Now that LeBron James has surpassed the 50K-point threshold, the next major historical mark to watch belongs to Alex Ovechkin. The Washington Capitals star is just a few goals away from passing Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s leading goal scorer. To add some good will to this historic achievement, Ovechkin has teamed up with the Washington Capitals, Hockey Fights Cancer, and the V Foundation for Cancer Research, launching “The GR8 Chase for Victory Over Cancer.” Ovechkin will donate “a dollar amount equal to his career goal total for every goal he scores through the remainder of his NHL career.” That donation will then be matched by Capitals’ owner, Monumental Sports & Entertainment. In addition, fans are being asked for a suggested donation of $8 – matching Ovechkin’s jersey number – or whatever else they’re able to give.

ESPN’s “Around The Horn” Will End On May 23

After 23 years of debating sports stories on ESPN, “Around The Horn’s” television life his coming to an end. The final episode of sports journalist punditry will air on May 23rd. The show debuted on November 4th of 2002, and over 4,900 episodes have aired…with Tony Reali hosting the show since 2004. After the show’s end, ESPN will run a 30-minute version of “SportsCenter,” with updates on future scheduling to be announced later during the summer.

NASCAR Sues Michael Jordan’s Front Row Motorsports

The legal bad blood between NASCAR and Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports got seriously revved up yesterday. NASCAR has filed a lawsuit against Front Row and longtime Jordan business associate and advisor Curtis Polk. Calling the teams an “illegal cartel,” NASCAR’s suit accuses the teams of “agreeing to a scheme to pressure NASCAR to accept their collusive terms, including by engaging in media campaigns, interfering with NASCAR’s broadcast agreement negotiations, threatening boycotts of NASCAR events and engaging in a group boycott of a NASCAR Team Owner Council Meeting.” A comment from Polk and the racing teams has yet to be issued.
