Have you ever been to a place that ONLY accepted cash, and if you didn't have any, they'd just point to a shady ATM in the corner? Well, now the opposite is happening.
These days, a lot of places DON'T take cash . . . and only accept DIGITAL payments, through credit and debit cards, or mobile wallets. So what happens if you ONLY have cash?
"Reverse ATMs" have been popping up, which take your cash . . . and then spit out plastic. They're basically burner debit cards . . . and they deduct a transaction fee, which is usually a few bucks.
They have these things at Yankee Stadium, where the concession stands don't accept cash. But some people are NOT happy about it.
Obviously, a lot of people carry cards . . . but cashless businesses can be a burden for older or lower-income shoppers . . . not to mention younger people who haven't set up credit cards or bank accounts.
