Movies: Joker Is Out Today, Top-Grossing Horror Movies, + More

New in Theaters: "Joker" and "Lucy in the Sky"

Joaquin Phoenix is getting a lot of praise for his performance in this stand-alone origin story. It's set in a dark and gritty Gotham City of 1981. The fact that it's not a typical comic book movie is the whole point, but it's got a lot of people worried.

The movie is supposed to be extremely violent, and is definitely NOT for kids. The families of the Aurora, Colorado shooting victims are concerned about the amount of violence. And the local theater where 12 people were murdered during a screening of "The Dark Knight" seven years ago has wisely chosen not to show this film.

The Joker in this movie has a medical condition that causes him to laugh uncontrollably, which doesn't exactly help his job as a street clown or his dream of becoming a stand-up comic . . . but is integral to becoming Batman's archenemy.

Robert DeNiro plays a late-night host who mocks a viral video of him on his show and later brings him on as a guest after he gains a cult following. The movie's directed by Todd Phillips, who worked with fellow producer Bradley Cooper on "A Star Is Born". Phillips helped write the script and a lot of the dark elements of this movie are being compared to two of DeNiro's other movies, "Taxi Driver" and "The King of Comedy" . . . where DeNiro played a struggling comic who became obsessed with a talk show host.
