Dave Grohl Recalls Nerves Before Nirvana’s Reading Festival Set
Foo Fighters are set to headline Reading & Leeds festival this weekend, marking their seventh appearance on the stage of the festivals. It’s also far from the first time Grohl in particular has played Reading, since he performed there with Nirvana back in the ‘90s.
In a new interview, Grohl recalls Nirvana’s 1992 headlining set at Reading festival, an era-defining moment. Since then, he says that the festivals have “tripled in size,” but that didn’t stop him from feeling nervous at the time. In the 12 months surrounding the appearance, the band went from being “halfway up the bill” to the headliners of the iconic festival, and he’s “amazed” that they “pulled it off” considering the band’s “ups and downs” at the time.
“Kurt [Cobain] had been in and out of rehab, the band hadn’t really done much in the months leading up to it,” he recalls. “The first performance with Nirvana was terrifying but we did it, then the first Foo Fighters performance was our biggest one ever and we did it.”
