Gender Reveal Party Creator Wants To End Them After Latest Wildfire

It's been confirmed that a "smoke-generating pyrotechnic device" used at a gender reveal party sparked the massive El Dorado Fire in California. As of this writing the fire has burned nearly 12,000 acres in San Bernardino County.

According to CNN, the blogger who is widely credited with creating the concept of the gender reveal party, Jenna Karvunidis, is now condemning the increasingly over-the-top events. She took to Facebook to express her thoughts:

"Stop having these stupid parties. For the love of God, stop burning things down to tell everyone about your kid's penis. No one cares but you."

Since Karvunidis wrote about her own gender reveal party back in 2008, gender reveal parties have escalated from the original idea (cut a cake and show people that it's pink or blue) to often include increasingly elaborate stunts. A 2017 reveal in Arizona that led to a wildfire spanning 47,000 acres, a reveal in Florida earlier this year led to a 10-acre brush fire, they've caused a plane crash, a car fire and at least one death. An Iowa family basically built a pipe bomb to make a pink or blue explosion and a piece of shrapnel hit and killed a grandmother watching from nearly 50 feet away.

So, yeah, it seems like it might time to retire the gender reveal party.
