Careful Out There! The Eclipse Could Cause a Lot of Car Crashes

Slow down and be extra careful on the roads today, especially before and after the eclipse.

A study found there was a brief but significant 31% jump in accidents surrounding the big eclipse in 2017. That translates to an extra crash every 25 minutes, and one additional fatality every 95 minutes.

Most of those crashes probably weren't caused by the eclipse itself though. They think it had more to do with all the extra traffic. Here are the five other main factors . . .

People driving unfamiliar routes . . . people speeding to get to their viewing area on time . . . drivers getting distracted by the eclipse itself . . . pedestrians viewing the eclipse from the side of the road . . . and more drunk drivers because of "eclipse-related celebrations."

There could be even more crashes this time, especially around the "path of totality" stretching from Texas to Maine. More people are within driving distance this time. Half of Americans live within 200 miles of it.
