"Imaginary Friends" Don't Count in the Carpool Lane

This would be a cute idea from your kid, but not so cute in the eyes of the law: The California Highway Patrol posted to let people know "imaginary friends" don't count in the carpool lane.

California has "FasTrak" monitors you set yourself according to how many people are in your car. If you set it to two or three, you get a discount on tolls.

Some guy was using the express lane near San Francisco last Wednesday. And when his monitor scanned through, it said he had three people in his car. But a cop saw him driving alone and pulled him over.

He had a t-shirt wrapped around his passenger's seat, with a bucket hat on the headrest. So that's "Passenger #2". But there was no Passenger #3 at all.

The highway patrol posted an image, set to the song "You've Got a Friend in Me" from "Toy Story". They said, quote, "Imaginary friends don't count as 'Occupants' when setting a FasTrak transponder. Yesterday, this driver thought he could out smart our Officers on patrol but failed."

The standard fine for setting your transponder wrong is $238.
