Got an old Gmail address you haven't used in a while? Today might be your last chance to save it.
Starting tomorrow, Google will begin deleting unused accounts that have been inactive for more than two years.
All your old emails will be deleted. Same goes for any photos and Google Docs you've got saved in the account.
They announced it in May and said it's for security reasons. If an account hasn't been used in years, it's "more likely to be compromised."
They say most abandoned accounts use old passwords that hackers have probably stolen by now. Even if you don't use the account, they can still find stuff in there that can be used for identity theft.
If you've got an old address that forwards to your current one, you might still need to sign in to save it. It's not clear if forwarding is enough to keep it alive.
If that's the case though, you should have gotten an email by now. Google's been sending them out to any accounts they're planning to deactivate.
You may actually have a little longer than today. They're starting with accounts that were set up and never used. Then they'll move on to the rest. But if there's one you know you want to protect, don't wait.
Just sign in today . . . read or send an email . . . and you should be good.
