The price of Girl Scout Cookies is pretty simple. . . but "scalpers" are threatening to make it more like buying Taylor Swift tickets.
The Girl Scouts introduced a new flavor, Raspberry Rally, as an "online exclusive." Which is fine, except that it's also a limited edition . . . and it sold out almost immediately. The Girl Scouts say it was "more popular than anticipated."
So people who DID get boxes of Raspberry Rally are re-selling them online at inflated prices. There are hundreds of boxes on eBay . . . and most of them are going for around $25 to $30 . . . five times more than the Girl Scout price.
And some SCALPERS are asking for $100 or more.
The Girl Scouts are NOT happy about this. They say that when cookies are purchased through third-party sellers, the troops don't get a share of that money. And they can't vouch for the condition of those boxes.
eBay will NOT take the listings down. They say, "We strongly support the entrepreneurial spirit of hardworking local Girl Scout troops . . . however, the sale of Girl Scout cookies does not violate eBay policies."
Last year, the Girl Scouts said the online exclusive was meant to teach new business strategies to the scouts.
But now, they're getting a lesson on "dynamic pricing" . . . and what happens when supply can't keep up with demand, causing the value to exceed the cost.
