MUSIC: Over 1,000 Musicians Pay Tribute To Taylor Hawkins

Over 1,000 Musicians Pay Tribute To Taylor Hawkins

For the first time in three years, over a thousand musicians from 25 countries got together at Stade de France in Paris for the Rockin’1000 concert. Since the concert started out as a plan to get the attention of the Foo Fighters and have them appear in the small town of Cesena, Italy, it’s fitting they included a tribute to the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins with a special performance of “My Hero.”

The concert also featured covers of The Who, Rage Against the Machine, Pink Floyd, The White Stripes, and Guns N’ Roses for the crowd of 50,000 people.

The Offspring Frontman Delivers USC Commencement Speech

Dr. Dexter Holland delivered this year’s commencement speech at USC’s Keck School of Medicine, and yes, that’s the frontman for The Offspring. Holland earned a Ph.D. in molecular biology from USC five years ago and has devoted himself to HIV research...and his science has impacted his music.

In an interview with Vice, Dr. Holland spilled the beans on how a part of The Offspring's catalog was inspired by science, saying the iconic song “Come Out and Play” was inspired by Holland’s lab work, with the line “You gotta keep’em separated” refers to the fact that you have to keep Erlenmeyer flasks apart while cooling them down.

Metallica Team With Walmart For Range Of Colored Vinyl

Metallica is going back into business with Walmart for a range of exclusive colored vinyl releases. Load, ReLoad, Garage, Inc., St. Anger, and Death Magnetic will all be released through the retailer as a limited-edition bundle on June 17th. All the albums have been pressed on double vinyl except Garage, Inc., which is on three LPs.

Don’t have a good turntable to play them on? Metallica has plans to help you out with that, too; they’ve announced a partnership with Pro-ject Audio Systems to release a new turntable this summer. The LP bundle is available to pre-order now through Walmart.

It’s a big week for the band because the San Francisco Giants also held their ‘Metallica Night’ event on Tuesday, and James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett blew the crowd away with their National Anthem, rocking Giants’ jerseys while they rocked the fans.

Labels Are Forcing Artists to Spend Too Much Time on Social Media According to Mike Shinoda

Would you rather have your favorite artist create new music OR spend their time posting on social media? This seems to be a new struggle that musicians are forced to deal with.

MIKE SHINODA (you know, the rapper in LINKIN PARK) says labels are putting pressure on artists to prioritize their social media channels like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.

In a series of Tweets, he said, quote, "How is a young artist expected to put in enough time to get great at their craft when they need to feed all these content channels? . . .

"The time they spent generating mind numbing 'content' might have been at the expense of the best song they never wrote."

(Halsey recently complained about this exact thing.)
