GrubHub Gave Everyone in NYC Free Lunch for 3 Hours, It Didn’t Go Well

Over eight million people live in New York City's five boroughs. Who could have guessed that offering ALL of them free food at once was a bad idea?

GrubHub had a promo in New York yesterday, where you could get free lunch from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. . . . or technically, $15 off your order. And what followed was TOTAL CHAOS.

As soon as it started, restaurants were flooded with orders and couldn't keep up. One café in Brooklyn got 200 orders in five minutes, so there was no way to fill them all.

Employees were slammed . . . delivery drivers were slammed . . . and most people who tried to get in on it either had to wait hours for their food, or their order got canceled.

Basically, everyone involved was upset, including a whole lot of hangry customers. And GrubHub's customer service line was so busy, you couldn't get through. One guy who called got a message that said over 3,600 people were in line in front of him.

Some people did get their food, but you basically had to be camped out online with your order ready to go at exactly 11 o'clock.

GrubHub got blasted on social media all day for not thinking it through. But a spokesman for the company tried to spin it as a positive, saying the promotion, quote, "exceeded all expectations."
