Legendary broadcaster Bryant Gumbel was reportedly hospitalized on Monday (October 20) after suffering a "medical emergency" at his apartment in New York City, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to TMZ.

Gumbel, 77, was reportedly rushed to the hospital just after 9:00 p.m. local time after being taken out of his building on a gurney. The former TODAY and Real Sports host remained hospitalized on Tuesday (October 21), however, a family member told TMZ that he was "okay," despite not revealing additional details about his condition.

Gumbel, who retired from broadcasting in 2023, had previously been diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009, which he said was caused by smoking three packs of cigarettes in his younger years and had part of his lung removed during an operation. The veteran broadcaster hosted TODAY from 1982 to 1997 and was the host of HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel for its entire run from 1995 to 2023, having won several Emmys for both programs.

Gumbel's reported hospitalization came months after his older brother, legendary CBS Sports anchor and commentator Greg Gumbel, died at the age of 78 following a battle with cancer in December. Greg served many roles during his time with CBS Sports, which included working as both a studio host and play-by-play man, most notably for the NFL and NCAA basketball and was the first African-American play-by-play man to call a major sports championship in the U.S. during his coverage of Super Bowl XXXV in 2001.
