A 477-Mile-Long Bolt of Lightning Stretched from Houston to Mississippi

A 477-Mile-Long Bolt of Lightning Stretched from Houston to Mississippi… New World Record!

I don't know if we'll break any records at the Olympics, but here's a new feather in our cap: The United States now holds the record for the longest LIGHTNING bolt . . . almost 500 MILES long.

The World Meteorological Organization tracks this stuff using satellites. They say that on April 29th, 2020, a bolt of lightning stretched just over 477 miles from Houston all the way to southeast Mississippi.

They just announced it's now officially the biggest bolt of lightning ever recorded. The old record was 440 miles and happened in Brazil four years ago.

(Here's a satellite image of the thunderstorm that the record-setting bolt happened during.)
