17 years ago today- In 2004, "Dimebag" Darrell (Abbott) of Damageplan was murdered when a crazed fan jumped on stage and shot him at point-blank range. The shooter killed three other people before he was taken out by the first cop to arrive on the scene.

41 years ago today- In 1980, John Lennon was shot and killed outside his New York City apartment building, The Dakota.
Mark David Chapman, a former mental patient who had earlier that day asked for and received Lennon's autograph, was arrested and convicted for the killing. He's still in prison. He's been eligible for parole several times, but he's been denied every time so far. His next parole hearing is in 2022.
