“Hair Love” Creators Invite Suspended Teen To Oscars
The support continues to pour in for DeAndre Arnold. To review, the Texas student was suspended and told that he wouldn’t be able to walk at his graduation unless he cut his dreadlocks. As we told you, Ellen DeGeneres and Alicia Keys presented DeAndre with a $20,000 college scholarship.
Now the folks responsible for “Hair Love” have invited DeAndre and his mom, Sandy, to the Oscars. Gabrielle Union and her husband, Dwyane Wade– the producers of the Oscar nominated short – and director Matthew A. Cherry announced in a Twitter video that not only would they cover travel for DeAndre and his mom, the good folks at Dove would be giving them the full wardrobe and glam treatment. Cherry said, “We've all been so inspired by your story and this is the very least we can do to thank you for standing up for yourself and for your right to wear your natural hair at school.”
DeAndre told CBS This Morning that receiving the invite was “a surreal moment.” He also thanked his mom spreading the message. “My mom deserves any special treatment she gets. She deserves this. She's been working so hard, on the computer day and night, just to try and help me get my word out," he said. "When you have people like this in your corner, there's no way you can lose. No way.”
