According to Variety, Naomi Watts has snagged one of the lead roles in HBO's upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series. Not much to go on, but the article describes her character as “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”
The still-untitled show will be set thousands of years before the events of the current GOT series and will chronicle the world's fall from a golden age of heroes to its darkest hour. Screenwriter Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kick-Ass) co-created the new show with Thrones mastermind George R.R. Martin. No release date has been announced for the new series, but it's probably safe to assume it won't premiere until 2020. Game of Thrones returns to HBO for a six-episode, eighth and final season some time in 2019.
