Scout Bar was full of groovy, tribal metal goodness on Sunday, February 12. The "Return to the Roots" tour was celebrating the 20th anniversary of Sepultura’s Roots, with founding members and brothers, Max and Iggor Cavalera.
The set kicked off with “Roots Blood Roots,” as well as a nice beer bath for myself. Following objections to me temporarily blocking an audience members view, the next ninety minutes, felt like a primal journey to Brazil, complete with tribal sounds and mosh pits. Crushing guitars, a four person drum off and even a berimbau (traditional Brazilian instrument) helped the sound to be achieved.
One thing the lead singer, Max Cavalera, does expect and demand of his crow is to constantly keep the floor moving. If all fourteen songs on Roots wasn’t enough, a Celtic Frost and Motörhead cover were thrown in for good measure.
One thing I did note was that there was truly something unique about this performance. Even after seeing the band countless times now, I could tell there is a real passion about this album for both Max & Iggor Cavalera. The brothers may have their many other projects, but at the end of the day, they shine the best together.
