Food News: Sargento Finally Made American Cheese That's Actual "Cheese"

Sargento Finally Made American Cheese That's Actual "Cheese"

If you think your favorite cheese is American, you're wrong. It can't technically be called "cheese" because of all the fillers and how it's processed. So they use terms like "cheese product" or "cheese food."

But the folks at Sargento claim they've finally cracked the code, and just released a new American cheese that DOES qualify.

It's called "Natural American Cheese" and it only has five ingredients, while other types have nine or more. They say it's similar to how Colby-Jack is made.

They claim they spent 10 years working on it to make it taste and MELT like regular American cheese. It hit grocery stores yesterday.

"Food & Wine" was quick to point out that "natural cheese" isn't a term regulated by the FDA. But from what we can tell, five ingredients means it's "cheese." Whether it tastes like the fake stuff, we don't know.
