A Man Who Was Arrested for Arson in a Forest Said He Was Doing a "Controlled Burn"

This is like a thief robbing a convenience store, and saying they were just trying to show the security system wasn't up to snuff.

A man in Florida named Justin Sorci was arrested for arson after he started two illegal fires in the Osceola National Forest. They were a lot bigger than a campfire. The Forest Service noticed the smoke, and a "slow simmering fire in grasses, brush, and trees."

Justin admitted to setting the fires. He claimed he was conducting "controlled burns," which he was permitted to do as a "sovereign citizen."

According to the FBI, "sovereign citizens" are "anti-government extremists who believe that even though they physically reside in this country, they are separate from the United States," and don't have to follow the rules.

Not surprisingly, that didn't fly. He was cuffed, and he's been indicted for committing felony arson on federal property. A court date hasn't been set.
