What's The Difference Between Mezcal and Tequila?

Mezcal and tequila both are made from the agave plant in Mexico but there are differences in the two that most people may not be aware of. Mezcal the word means spirits made from the agave plant, so tequila is a type of mezcal similar to bourbon being a type of whiskey.

Mezcal has become increasingly popular in the past few years and it can be made from any type of agave, while tequila has to use blue Weber agave only and it can come from only five states in Mexico. There is a difference in flavor between the two as well as mezcal is bold and smoky while tequila has a smoother flavor.

TYPES OF MEZCAL

  • Joven or Blanco – unaged with no color
  • Madurado en Vidrio – aged in glass for at least one year underground or in a light-free, temperature-controlled space.
  • Reposado – aged in any type of wood for 2 – 12 months.
  • Anejo – aged in any type of wood for a minimum of one year.

TYPES OF TEQUILA

  • Blanco – called sliver or white, it’s aged for less than two months and is required to be bottled within 60 days.
  • Joven – called gold, it’s a blend of white and aged or blanco.
  • Reposado – has to be aged in oak casks for a minimum of two months.
  • Anejo – aged a minimum of one year in oak and has a rich, nuanced flavor.
  • Extra Anejo – must be aged for a minimum of three years in oak and is the oldest and darkest tequila produced.

Both mezcal and tequila are made from the piña, or heart, of the agave plant and the piña is cooked and crushed with the juice fermented and distilled. Mezcal cooks the piña in a traditional method in a stone pit with charcoal to give it the smokiness while the piña for tequila is usually done in a brick oven. Some tequila producers use chemicals and shortcuts to process the plant and these products are usually cheaper at the store. Now you know some of the differences in the two in case you were confused and more details can be found HERE.
