Lars Ulrich Says Metallica Models Themselves After Grateful Dead
Metallica and Grateful Dead have more in common than you might think. Lars Ulrich has revealed in a new interview with “CNBC” that the band models their “existence” after Grateful Dead, “living outside of the mainstream.”
Lars says Metallica has been trying to create their own “little bubble or eco system,” so they can be “financially independent.” That way, they can control all the different elements of being a band, and not have to “owe anybody any money” – including running their own record label.
“We sort of model our existence on the Grateful Dead, who considered themselves to be living outside of the mainstream… that’s been our dream,” Lars explains. “We like to think that in our bubble that we [have the power].”

Alice In Chains are the recipients of this year’s Founders Award from the Museum of Pop Culture. Each year, the museum from the band’s hometown of Seattle celebrates an influential artist, and this year Alice In Chains is joining the likes of Nancy Wilson from Heart, The Doors, Jimmy Page, and Joe Walsh.
The virtual Founders Award benefit happens on December 1st at 8:30pm ET. Alice in chains will perform, and other bands will cover songs from their legendary career.
“It's just such an honor, and it’s really cool because first of all, it's a hometown kind of thing,” bassist Mike Inez says of the honor. “We've been hearing other bands and what songs they're picking to play, so we're really excited to hear it.”
