There are lots of reasons to want to travel to a specific city, and it turns out, food is a big one for a lot of Americans. Some people plan their trips exclusively around what they plan to eat, whether they’re hitting award-winning food trucks or trying to score a reservation at a Michelin-starred restaurant. There’s even a name for this popular trend of taking a vacation specifically for the destination’s food — a “foodcation” — and new research reveals the top destinations for them across the country.

According to the poll of 2-thousand Americans, 21% have planned a trip just for the food and 75% research where to eat before they pack their bags.

They spend an average of two-and-a-half hours researching where to dine on a trip.
On their most recent foodcation, the average person traveled 484 miles and spent $910 for the experience.
But some would be willing to shell out far more money — an average of $1,929 — for the chance to eat something on their bucket list, like sushi in Tokyo or curry in Mumbai.
The thing is, one visit isn’t enough to “fully experience” the food in a city. Respondents say this actually takes five trips to the destination.
This is especially true for the 67% who say they’re more adventurous eaters when they’re away from home.
While 14% prefer “big name” restaurants while traveling, 41% like to find “hole-in-the-wall” places, and 45% enjoy a mix of both.
