Tony Romo pleaded no contest to drunk driving yesterday and has lost his license for six months. He must also complete an alcohol assessment program, and once he regains his license, he will be required to install an ignition interlock device in any car registered to him.
More importantly, Romo acknowledged that he has a problem. In an Instagram post, he shared that multiple back surgeries not only ended his football career prematurely but also left him dependent on painkillers. In an attempt to overcome that dependency, he became overly reliant on alcohol.
He stated, "As I have taught my three young sons: when you fall short, you stand up and take full responsibility. That is an important first step. The harder and more important step is examining the path that brought you here and making the necessary changes to move forward. That path requires honesty."
Romo mentioned that he is working with a team of doctors to address his issues and expressed hope that he will return to CBS "in time."
