Washington State Has Caught the First Murder Hornet in the U.S.

Remember the "murder hornet" era of the pandemic? Time to start talking about it again.

The Washington State Department of Agriculture just announced it trapped a murder hornet just south of the Canadian border back on July 14th. They confirmed it was a murder hornet last week.

That makes it the first one to be caught in the U.S. While there have been sightings, we've never taken one down until now.

An official from the WSDA says, quote, "This is encouraging because it means we know the traps work . . . but it also means we have work to do."

And he's not kidding. They've got to act FAST to find murder hornet nests and set up more traps. Because if these things spread, they could be REALLY bad news.

Murder hornets kill up to 50 people a year in Japan, and their stingers are so powerful they can stab through beekeeping suits. They're also a huge predator to honey bees, which are struggling enough without a new enemy.
