Apple Cancels "The Banker" Premiere Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

“The Banker” is based on the true story of Bernard Garrett Sr., a Black man who recruited a White man to front his growing financial business some six decades ago in a pre-Civil Rights Act America. Apparently Apple’s first major film release has been put on hold over charges that Bernard Garrett Jr., the son of the film’s subject, sexually assaulted two of his half sisters, Cynthia and Sheila Garrett. Garrett Jr. – who was initially billed as a co-producer of the film – was supposed to do press, along with Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie

Now “The Banker,” which was supposed to be Apple’s first theatrical release, is being put on hold, and Garrett Jr’s name has been scrubbed from all press materials. In a statement, Apple said, “We purchased ‘The Banker’ earlier this year as we were moved by the film's entertaining and educational story about social change and financial literacy. Last week some concerns surrounding the film were brought to our attention. We, along with the filmmakers, need some time to look into these matters and determine the best next steps.”
