Florida residents are tired of seeing pets abandoned during hurricanes and tropical storms and now the state's government intends to hold those that abandon their pets accountable.
A new bill proposed would charge those that abandon their pets, leaving them restrained and unattended during natural or manmade disasters, with a fine up to $5,000 or up to a year in jail.
Sponsors of the bill say they want to give these animals "a fighting chance." Palm Beach County alone had to rescue 49 dogs and two cats that were abandoned during Hurricane Irma.
