In 1993, Nirvana was pretty much the biggest name in rock, so they knew they could get away with asking for almost anything in their tour rider. At a stop in Buffalo, NY, they decided to take a page from Van Halen with one of their requests.
According to Kim Greenfield, the director of the former University Union Activities Board at the University of Buffalo, written on the contract for the November 5th show was the line: "Nirvana wants several bags of M&Ms - every color except green."
Greenfield told UB's newspaper, The Spectrum, "Somebody had to sit and pull all the green ones out."
But perhaps the Seattle rockers could be forgiven. They accepted the gig for only $45,000, $78,000 in today's money, when they were pulling in many, many times more in booking fees.
