The STONE TEMPLE PILOTS have a new lead singer . . . and as expected, it's former "X Factor" contestant Jeff Gutt. He's 41 . . . and in addition to his time on TV, he was also the lead singer of a nu-metal band called Dry Cell.
STP says Jeff beat out 15,000 people who wanted the gig, which is surprising . . . since in just the past two years, STP has had two lead singers outright DIE on them, and they haven't had a hit song in 16 years.
But they're hoping to change that. They've already recorded an album with Jeff. There's no word on a title yet . . . but it'll be out sometime early next year. STP's last full-length album came out over seven years ago.
The new Stone Temple Pilots performed their first show in West Hollywood on Tuesday night.
Bassist Robert DeLeo says, quote, "We're not gonna be around forever. So, we just want to be making music. And we want Jeff to be a part of that." (Until death do us part.) (???)
STP also put out a new single with Jeff yesterday called "Meadow".
Here they are with him singing live at The Troubador in LA the other night. He DOES sound a LOT like Scott Weiland.
