First Gene Edited Pig Heart Transplant Patient Dies

First Gene Edited Pig Heart Transplant Patient Dies - The Maryland man who made history two months ago when he received the first-ever genetically-modified pig's heart has passed away.

The University of Maryland Medical Center says David Bennett died this week at the age of 57. He received the groundbreaking procedure in early January after he didn't qualify for a human heart transplant.

Dr. Bartley Griffith, who performed the surgery, said Bennett "proved to be a brave and noble patient who fought all the way to the end."

The procedure has opened the door for more research and future FDA approval.
