Tom Hanks to Star in Mr. Rogers Biopic Variety Reports

Tom Hanks will star in the Mr. Rogers biopic "You Are My Friend" according to a new report from Variety. Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl) will direct the film from a script by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.

The story draws from the real-life friendship cultivated between Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod. The story is described as a cynical journalist reluctantly accepting an assignment to write a profile piece on the much-beloved TV personality and "finds his perspective on life transformed."

“This is the perfect alchemy of talent coming together at the perfect time to remind us all of the transformative power of kindness and respect to heal and to unite. We are proud to partner with Marielle, Tom and everyone at Big Beach to bring this inspirational true story to audiences all over the world,” Hannah Minghella, president of TriStar Pictures Hannah Minghella said.

This isn't the first time Hanks has played a beloved pop culture icon. The film and television star also starred as filmmaker Walt Disney in the 2013 drama Saving Mr. Banks.

Big Beach Films is producing along with Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf, alongside Youree Henley. Production is set to begin in the fall.
