Obviously, tensions are high between the U.S. and Russia right now. Which is why it may not have been the best idea for DAVID DUCHOVNY to film an ad for a Russian beer in which he wonders what would have happened if he grew up in Russia.

Duchovny has Ukrainian heritage, and the ad places him in various historical and pop culture moments that resonate with Russians, including the space race, hockey and cheesy '80s Russian pop.

Duchovny is already getting some backlash for "celebrating" Russia. So he issued the following statement . . . quote, "Being proud of one's ancestry is not a political statement on any current government or public policies.

"In retrospect, and in light of recent tragic events, I can now see the potential for misunderstanding and hope people will understand."
