Haunted Hump Day

October 24, 2013 HOUSTON—

Ghouls and other immortal characters prowled the grounds at Screamworld on Wednesday, attempting to frighten the crowd gathered in support of the Houston Furniture Bank as they waited to tour haunted houses. Haunted houses helped make empty houses homes when Screamworld, a Halloween scream park located in north Houston featuring five haunted attractions, donated all proceeds for the night to the Houston Furniture Bank, non--profit organization that helps improve the quality of life for impoverished families and individuals transitioning to independent living by supplying them with furniture.

Providing those trying to make fresh start with furnishings is step toward restoring their pride and dignity, but unfortunately, the demand is greater than the supply.  Oli Mohammed, executive director and founder of the HFB said the organization currently supplies about 150 families month with furniture, but hopes with the help of the community to increase that number to 500 month over the next two years.

The HFB partners with more than 75 social service agencies in the Greater Houston area, and recipients of furniture are referred to the HFB by case workers.

“When you get Section 8 housing assistance, there is federal and state mandate that is four walls and running water.  So if you come out battered women’s shelter or Star of Hope, or if you come out of prison and you need housing help, well, you get four walls and running water.  No couch, no bed, no dishes; it’s kind of ridiculous,” said HFB Chairman of the Board, Hal Lynde, also known as “Captain Cash.”

The HFB accepts cash donations as well as gently used furniture, and provides a free pick-up service.  To make donation or volunteer ,visit the HFB a or call 713-842-9771.
