The Bound by the Road Tour made its stop in Houston this past Saturday night, February 25, down at Scout Bar. It was actually a pretty diverse line up with two of the biggest names obviously being DevilDriver and Death Angel.

It’s always interesting to see such classic older bands like Death Angel, opening up to newer bands, but that’s the way business goes. The Bay Area thrashers Death Angel came up shortly after 9pm opened up with some classics from their debut, “Evil Priest” and never slowed down, but I'm not sure "slow" is in their musical vocabulary anyway.

They made a great use of their short set of seven songs, and made it feel much longer than it was. The highlight, for me at least, was hearing “The Moth,” from their latest release The Evil Divide. Singer Mark Osegueda noted that this is their version of the song, which I can only assume is a reference to Metallica’s “Moth into Flame.”

  • The Ultra Violent/Evil Priest

  • Left for Dead
  • Father of Lies
  • Caster of Shame
  • Thrown to the Wolves
  • The Moth

DevilDriver came on after what seemed like multiple teases with the house PA turning the volume down and back up a few times. In no surprise to me, they opened up with their staple, “End of the Line.” Even though frontman Dez Fafara isn’t the biggest guy out there, the stage always has a way po bigger than he is and can be quite intimidating -which is understood with his intense vocals.

After nearly fifteen years and becoming holders of the unofficial Guinness Book of World Record’s attempt at the biggest mosh pit, DevilDriver always has a crowd moving. The only “break” during the show would be their cover of Awolnation's “Sail” which has become more or less a staple now. To my surprise the band closed with “Meet the Wretched,” which was absent in their last Houston appearance. This, in my opinion, should always be there closer. For long time fans like myself, the set list wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, but they'll always find me out in the crowd to support them.
